I am working on a blog to showcase some of the best vintage reproduction greeting cards available through Zazzle. I hope you will take a look. I have been combing through Zazzle to find ones I think are particularly well done. They are taken from vintage cards saved over the years, for which the copyright either didn't exist, or has long ago expired.

These cards give a nice glimpse into the past. For example, the vintage cards with Santa Clauses show him in an array of costumes, not just the one we think of today. This card shows him in a flowing red velvet robe with white fur trim and satin lining.

I did several Yin Yang designs for a shop on Zazzle called Sun and Shadows. This is only one of them. The posters are actually getting some real interest, although I have also sold the design on t-shirts and stickers.

I have this store on Zazzle called Celtic Dreams. It contains lots of great Celtic Monograms on a variety of products. Recently, I decided to do some new, "softer" designs, including some baby birth announcements with matching postage. [Yes, there are designs for boys as well.] They are totally customizable, so if you'd like it to say "It's Octuplets" or you'd rather have the background green because you had a boy and a girl and you'd like to not have favorites quite yet, then that's possible, too. Also, you can change the postage rate, which is important because if you choose a square design, the rate is a bit different. That's the interesting thing with Zazzle, you can take someone's design, like this one, and switch it all around to suit you, and then you get exactly what you want.

I like turtles, and I did a new turtle design for my Turtle Hero Zazzle shop. It includes the rainbow of colored turtles you see on the bumper sticker above. [And you thought a fine arts degree was of little use, huh?] I had previously done the I Brake For Turtles design that's on the key fob, because you really can't overemphasize the fact that turtles do not dodge cars very well. The Rainbow Turtles flyer also was featured on the Today's Best list over at Zazzle on October 29, 2009.

Totally Random

I have been busy building a new shop for Zazzle called Totally Random. I am trying a new idea. Up to this point I have been doing tightly focused theme shops. I sell a little bit here and there, but it may take something like forever to get to the minimum payment. So what exactly are people buying?

I'm beginning to think that "sex" and "cute" are what's selling, and my work rarely falls into either category. So I've set out to do a shop dedicated to cute. OK, it isn't ALL cute, but it does contain at least 2 designs with teddy bears. [Hanging my head in shame.] At least it is making a few sales.

The interesting thing is that so many of my designs from this store have been on the Zazzle "Today's Best" list, yet they have never sold a single item. Go figure. Is making the list like the kiss of death or something? Or perhaps it is only other Zazzlers that look at these things, and if they are making as much money as I am, then they aren't exactly looking to make a purchase. I did some sketches of some very ornamental Day of the Dead style posters for Zazzle. This is the first time I've done any kind of Dia de Los Muertos type designs, but I am pretty pleased with how they came out.

My son thinks that any food that can be served on a pizza is OK with him. Nowadays, you can find a pizza with almost anything imaginable on it. Macaroni and cheese pizza?! Yuck.

My son's argument is that all the food groups are represented on an average pizza. Bread and cereal for the crust, vegetables in the tomato sauce, meats in the pepperoni, dairy in the cheese, and oils and fats in, well, all of it really. So I did this little design for him called My Favorite Food Group is Pizza. Pretty appropriate, as he's only 11.

There are some really nice vintage Christmas cards out there this year. This Zazzle store, Vintage Greetings, has some really nice cards from the early 1900's. The cards are beautiful, and are certain to please the recipient.

I particularly like this card with the beautiful girl and the holly. In a high tech world, so many of the cards available now seem "sanitary." Not so with these. Once Christmas is over, they make wonderful additions to scrapbooks and collages, too.

I did some designs for Zazzle recently, including this "Cute as a Bug" design. If you are not familiar with Zazzle, you can get all kinds of custom made-to-order items, remarkably reasonably priced, and promptly delivered. This Cute as a Bug card also comes as an invitation, stickers, t-shirts, mugs, mousepads, and so forth. You can do your own custom writing inside from a huge array of font styles, and you can also change the color of the background of the bug as well. Pretty cool.

Snowflakes on Zazzle

I have been so busy with moving and renovating a little house, that I have been terribly remiss in my blogging. That being said, I have managed to squeeze out some designs for Zazzle, so it isn't as though I totally disappeared. One of the things I have been working on is this new shop, A Total Flake.

There has been a lot written about doing tightly focused, themed shops on Cafepress and Zazzle. That's OK for Zazzle, as the shops are free, but not so good for Cafepress, where shops cost money monthly, whether you sell anything or not. So for now, these designs exist only on Zazzle.

A Total Flake carries only snowflake designs currently, although I may branch out into other sorts of winter stuff later. I'll have to see how it goes. Of course, this being July, sales on snowflake attire are not exactly brisk, no pun intended, but should the economy actually start to recover by the end of the year as the news people are trying to convince us it will, then I will be ready for that avalanche of orders that I'm sure is waiting just over the horizon there.

Wait; who moved my horizon?

Turtle Rescue

I am one of those people who will stop my car, get out, and transfer a turtle safely across the road, no matter how much traffic there is. And generally here in the South, people don't mind being held up a moment when it comes to saving turtles.

I'm not sure what it is about them that I like, but I really do like turtles. They are just good animals to save.

Down in Topsail Island, NC, and many other beach areas along the North Carolina coast, saving sea turtles is a big thing. You can get into deep trouble if you disturb a sea turtle nest, and volunteers make sure that on the nights the babies hatch, they have every opportunity to get to the water. It's a good thing.

So I did a Zazzle shop dedicated to turtle rescuers, called Turtle Hero. I'm just getting started with it, and yes, it is a bit obscure, but creative internet marketers would likely call that a "niche market," which, if you can tap into it, is supposed to be very profitable. I somehow doubt turtle rescuers are going to come out in droves to support my t-shirt efforts on their behalf, but I guess you never know.

So tell all your turtle loving friends about Turtle Hero, and don't be afraid to rescue one yourself. You'll be glad you did.

Zodiac Attack - Zodiak Apparel and Gifts

I've been working on some themed shops over at Zazzle. One of these shops is called Zodiac Attack, and it contains all kinds of zodiac themed designs.

Doing a series of zodiac designs is great fun, because you can get an image you really like and do 11 other variations on it, which is the perfect amount before you get bored with the idea.

Zodiac Attack contains an array of zodiac themed apparel and gift items. I must say I am really impressed by the vast array of styles and colors available on Zazzle's apparel line. If you haven't visited Zazzle, you really should give them a look. Plus, the designs are customizable, which means you could take a design I did for Leo, and add your own caption to it, and have a shirt no one else has, which is a pretty cool idea if you ask me.

Sun and Shadows

I have been experimenting with Zazzle recently. While I have always used Cafepress, my success isn't always spectacular. So last year I started experimenting with Zazzle. At the time, Zazzle wasn't getting a lot of traffic, so it took a good 6 months to get a sale there, but Zazzle is certainly showing promise now.

One of the nice aspects of Zazzle is that you can open a shop for free, and as many shops as you want, so it is more economical than Cafepress, which charges about $5 per month for a comparable shop.

I did a shop for Zazzle called Sun and Shadows. Right now, it is primarily sun based images, although moon themed items are likely on the way. It's nice, though, to be able to afford to make a tightly specialized shop.

I hope you'll drop by my Sun and Shadows shop. There are some great sun images, and you can get them on an impressive array of styles, colors, and sizes of apparel as well as gift and decor items. You can add your own sayings as well, for a totally custom look.

I decided to do some miscellaneous designs for Cafepress, but they really don't fit into any of my existing shops, so I decided to do some free basic shops to give them a home of their own.

This is a design I did called Craft Queen. It's available on all the usual t shirts, apparel, and gift items over at Cafepress.

I liked the way the letters looked like they'd been cut out with pinking sheers, and I added some little rivets to complete the look.

You probably know someone whose house has been taken over by the scrapbooking fairies or the craft monsters. Maybe that someone is you?

Ear Plug Jewelry

Personally, I don't wear plugs. In fact, I can barely remember to put in earrings once a week, so I doubt seriously I'd be very good with them, although I don't mind them on other people.

I never gave plugs any real thought until I was working on a Squidoo lens, Pink Leopard Apparel, Accessories, and Home Decor, where I ran across a pair of plugs in a pink leopard finish. It got me to thinking, which is always a bit dangerous.

So I did a few Squidoo lenses on plugs, which are actually pretty cool, as there are a lot of really nice designs out there. I'm kind of fond of this one with the clock parts inside. Here are the pages I've done so far:

Hider plugs are kind of an interesting idea, as they are flesh colored and are intended to sort of minimize the fact that you have a hole the size of a half dollar in your ear lobe. I'm not sure how well they'd work, but I can think of a few occasions wherein they might be useful.

Alpine Goat T-Shirts

I did a Squidoo Lens on Alpine Goat T-Shirts. As you might guess, the topic is pretty obscure, and as such, it's not attracting a lot of visitors. Never deterred by such trivial details as relevence, I press on.

I used to own an alpine named Eunice. Actually, her family had named her Unique, because they named their goats each year according to the alphabet, and Unique was born in the year they named everyone with a "U" name. She must have been a later goat, since they seemed to have run out of names.

Anyway, I could never really get behind standing at the back door and calling, "Unique!" so I renamed her Eunice, and she didn't seem to care one way or another.

Leopard Print Everything for Your Home

I couldn't sleep the other night, so I started a Squidoo lens that highlights all the things you can purchase in a leopard print, which is almost anything.

Who knew?

It had never occurred to me that there would be so many things in leopard. Leopard print pajamas and shoes, naturally, but leopard print plane sheets? Leopard print steering wheel covers? Leopard print yoga mats? I'll bet those raise an eyebrow or two in your yoga class.

Then, of course, are the leopard print desk fan, the leopard print toilet seat, and the leopard print dog pajamas.

Should it even be legal to dress a dog in leopard print pajamas? That's one to ponder there.

I am still working on switchplates lenses for Squidoo. They are fabulous! They are wonderful! And absolutely no one visit them. I should have gone for the toilet seats.

According to the basics of Christianity, every person is gifted. My gift appears to be my uncanny ability to get into the slowest line at the grocery store. So far, I haven't figured out what to do with that gift. Perhaps God will contact me through a tabloid.

I recently read where this woman says she has made over $750 selling decorative toilet seats from her Squidoo lens. That's nuts! I mulled that over for a few days. Can it be possible? Hmm...

Personally, I never seem to sell anything from my Squidoo lenses, even though everyone else claims to be making gobs of money. So I decided I needed to leave heartfelt, meaningful copy behind and churn out some totally useless commerce sites for people who have gobs of money to spend on things like decorative toilet seats.

My first series of the aforementioned useless commerce sites all center around decorative switchplates. The way I came to that epiphany was that I was recently looking at houses, and I viewed this house wherein all the switchplates had something to do with cats. Personally, I have never used a decorative switchplate, but now that I am researching them, I may change my mind should I ever get another house, but that's its own story.

I was particularly enamoured by this series of fake animal prints. The rainbow leopard one shown here is quite appealing, should I ever hire the ghost of Elvis to decorate my home. It seems pretty farfetched. Nonetheless, I hope you will visit some of my switchplate sites. Your artistic vision may be dramatically altered.

Obsessive Cat Disorder

I've written a lot about Obsessive Chihuahua Disorder, so I thought it was time to write about Obsessive Cat Disorder. After all, there are a lot of cat owners out there.

I am not one of them.

Don't get me wrong. It's not like I don't like cats. Well, OK, I really don't particularly care for them, but there are a lot of other people who do, and that's as it should be.

As with most of these things, the whole Obsessive Cat thing is there to make you laugh, teach you something, [the site is filled with cat trivia] and, of course, to cross promote my Cafepress shops in the hope, however vague, of getting you to buy something.

I've been working on some Squidoo lenses on collective nouns. My first on is Collective Nouns for Fish and Sea Mammals. In case you didn't know, a collective noun names a group of a particular thing, and they can be pretty amusing. Take for instance a "shiver" of sharks. In this case, "shiver" is a collective noun for a group of sharks, but it's also kind of fun because of the way in which it is descriptive. Chihuahua Obsessions

I've been looking at how loyal people are to different breeds of dogs. It seems that Chihuahua and Dachshund owners are among the most rabid. Could it be one of those things where the temperment of the dog is directly related to the temperment of the owner? Hmm....

Personally, I have only ever had dachshunds, [don't read anything into that] but I notice that the chihuahua owners are even more loyal, and even more likely to collect the dogs in multiples. I guess it makes sense; who could afford to feed a herd of Saint Bernards these days?

If we look at Google Trends, you can see chihuahuas [the blue line] are much more popular as a search term than dachshunds [the red line]. All of which tells me that chihuahua owners are pretty passionate about their dogs.

Becoming a Giant Squid

I became a Giant Squid today for my work on Squidoo. Yes really. Don't stare at me blankly. Anyway, it entitles me to a nifty purple shield by my name every so often when you see any of my lenses. Is that cool or what.

The Empire State Building

What series of Squidoo lenses on New York landmarks would be complete without the Empire State Building? It has a very interesting history, much like the Chrysler Building. Built during the Depression, it was referred to as the "Empty State Building" for years due to its lack of tenants.

Humor in Hard Times

I did a squidoo lens yesterday called Humor in Hard Times. It tries to take both a lighthearted and practical look at how screwed we all are as a nation right at this point.

Well, OK, how screwed I am.

Basically, I am down to nothing. Not that I mind working until I drop over dead, but I do wish there would be more to pass on to my kids. They are going to be billionaires, or so they tell me, so I guess inheriting some old socks with holes in them isn't going to cause them to get all that excited. Maybe they can take care of me in my old age.
